**Chen Qianyu’s entire job application to Endfield Industries was six words: “I just wanna join. It’s fate.”** HR gave her five days to rewrite it. She handed back the same line, put two blades on the HR assistant’s desk, and HR ended up rewriting its review standards instead.

Her operator files read like a comedy written by a very patient HR department. Under the jokes there is a real story: a mother who walked out with a hidden sword, a father who never asks questions, and a meeting with Perlica that explains why “fate” is the only word she needed. This is all of it, from the in-game English text.

**How we checked this.** Everything below comes from Chen Qianyu’s in-game text in the official English localization: her Basic Info, Human Resources Summary and Files 1 to 4, as shown on [Chen Qianyu’s operator page](https://endfieldhub.org/characters/chen-qianyu). We checked the current Version 1.x text on 6 October 2026\. The quotes are hers, her HR file’s, or Perlica’s.

**Short version first:** Chen’s six-word application in under two minutes, from our YouTube channel. The full story with every source follows below. More backstories are on the [Endfield lore hub](https://endfieldhub.org/lore).

## TL;DR - Key Points

* **Her application was six words.** “I just wanna join. It’s fate.” Five days of revision time changed nothing, except that two blades appeared on the HR assistant’s table.
* **She quit a job over milk tea.** Three months at Cheers and Drinks at La Fantoma, then “I had my fill of the milk tea so I left.”
* **She graduated Excellent and never knew.** She was too scared to check her results in case her mentors compared her to her mom.
* **Her mom named her for being easy to write.** She expected Chen to end up at the bottom of the class, writing her name out as punishment.
* **She is first on every party invite.** It isn’t alphabetical. Otherwise Antal would be first.
* **She sleeps three hours a night,** brought back office chair racing, only picks martial arts films for movie night, and once trimmed a sleeping engineer’s eyebrows.
* **Perlica says she makes people feel safe.** Perlica also says “maybe she’s just a little slow.”
* **Her mother vanished when the Aggeloi came.** Chen insists she is alive, and that is the link to Perlica, whose family is also gone.

## Who Is Chen Qianyu?

![Chen Qianyu's official art under an HR form headed "Her whole job application", with a stamp reading 6 WORDS](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/chen-qianyu-lore/chen-six-words.webp)

Chen Qianyu is a 5-star Physical operator in Arknights: Endfield who fights with a sword. Her Basic Info lists her as a Lung, born August 18, authenticated by Endfield Industries, and Oripathy negative. Her physical strength and combat skill are both rated Excellent; her tactical acumen and Originium Arts assimilation are Standard.

Her HR summary calls her a native of Hongshan City who once served at the Wuling Scientific Developmental District. Supervisor Perlica recruited her “via a private channel,” and she is now “a core member of the Crisis Team.” Her build and team details are on [her operator page](https://endfieldhub.org/characters/chen-qianyu).

## The Six-Word Application

![An HR revision form showing day 5, the same six words marked UNCHANGED, and two crossed swords under a NOT A THREAT stamp](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/chen-qianyu-lore/chen-swords-not-a-threat.webp)

Her Human Resources Summary is written by Martin Marvin Malen, an assistant in the HR Division, and it is the best thing in her file. HR has no standard for the Personal Motivations section, so an applicant whose answer is “too curt and/or straightforward” gets asked to rewrite it.

Chen was given “five standard days to revise this section.” She still wrote: **“I just wanna join. It’s fate.”** The assistant notes the need to “establish a new framework,” while “paying extra attention to the two blades that Operator Chen Qianyu placed on my table (though she claimed that she did not do so to threaten me).”

Then the review turns around. The assistant decides her answer is “a conclusion she arrived at after an extended period of self-contemplation,” notes that Perlica approved her recruitment personally, and that “the operator managed to solve many potential issues by offering much needed stability and support” during a period when the Supervisor “exhibited emotional fluctuations.” The final verdict: the six words are “congruent to the inner logic of the Endfield strategic objectives.” The application stood. The review standards did not.

## Her Work History

![A work history sheet: Cheers and Drinks at La Fantoma, 3 months, reason for leaving "I had my fill of the milk tea", beside an empty milk tea cup](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/chen-qianyu-lore/chen-milk-tea.webp)

File 1 says her background check was “not complicated. The operator is as consistent, simple, and straightforward as she appears.” She grew up in the Hongshan Crater, studied swordmancy at Tanjian Hall, and interned at a string of organizations and employers, which gave her years of solo combat experience at a young age. Every employer gave her stellar reviews. None of them kept her long.

So HR asked. Her answers, in order:

* **La Fantoma:** “Cheers and Drinks at La Fantoma? Wait, did I actually work there for three months?! Yeah, that’s easy to explain. I had my fill of the milk tea so I left.”
* **Temporary security:** “I wasn’t old enough to get an actual job but I really needed the money for my next stop. My only choice was to work in EXPOs and conferences.” She adds that those months were when she “met plenty of big shots in Talos-II.”
* **The Yinglung Special Task Force:** “I spent more than a year in Yinglung Special Task Force… Yeah, I did that, but can we not talk about this?” She says it simply wasn’t a good match. When HR suggests some people don’t get along with her, her proof that they do is a “pretty nice convo” with Duccio the Half-Face, “that notorious gang leader at the Asphalt Roundabout.”

To date, Endfield is the place she has stayed longest.

## The Grades She Never Checked

![A Tanjian Hall graduation card stamped EXCELLENT, with Chen Qianyu looking surprised beside a pink "?!"](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/chen-qianyu-lore/chen-excellent.webp)

HR also reads her graduation year performance at Tanjian Hall, and she hears it for the first time in the interview. “Hold on! My graduation year performance at Tanjian Hall is actually…” Then: “EXCELLENT?! Wait! You’re not reading it wrong, right?”

She never checked her results. “I never picked up enough courage to check the results… Yeah, I’m just a little worried that my mentors would compare me to my mom.”

## Named for Being Easy to Write

![A name practice sheet: "Expected: bottom of the class" struck through, "Actual: Excellent", the name Qianyu written over and over under an EASY TO WRITE stamp](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/chen-qianyu-lore/chen-name-qianyu.webp)

That mom comes up again in File 3, in Chen’s earliest memories. Her first spoken word was “Mom!” into an echo tube. And she remembers how she got her name: “Jianshan, we should call her Qianyu. She’ll probably end up at the bottom of her class like I did, so a simpler name will make it easier when the teacher makes her write it over and over.”

Her mother expected the bottom of the class. Chen graduated Excellent, and still could not bring herself to look.

## First on Every Invite

![A party guest list with Chen Qianyu circled at number 1 above Antal, stamped NOT ALPHABETICAL](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/chen-qianyu-lore/chen-party-invite.webp)

File 2 opens with an HR discovery: “Chen Qianyu” is always the first name on the invite list for celebrations, retirement parties and hangouts at every Endfield regional office and on the Dijiang. “This is not an alphabetical issue. Otherwise, Antal should be the first name on the list.”

The file credits her with getting “the most introverted operators to start talking” in under five minutes, mostly through “excessive over-reactions” and turning ordinary incidents into exciting ones. Some of the other entries:

* **Office chair racing** is back, “re-instated with Chen’s insistence.”
* **Movies Aboard Dijiang** is hers now, though most of her picks “happen to be martial arts films from Yan.”
* **Sleep:** she says she was “born without a serious need for sleep.” Colleagues count about three hours a night, and one has caught her “dozing off during her meditative sessions.”

![Four torn incident slips: 3 hours a night, office chair racing reinstated, movie night martial arts only, engineer's eyebrows trimmed](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/chen-qianyu-lore/chen-incident-reports.webp)

* **The eyebrows:** at an elite operator’s retirement party, Andre “snoozed on the sofa” while Chen, “surrounded by a crowd, trimmed the engineer’s eyebrows with a pair of scissors.”

## What Perlica Says About Her

![A pink card reading "Maybe she's just a little slow" with Chen Qianyu smiling below it](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/chen-qianyu-lore/chen-a-little-slow.webp)

At that same party, Perlica, a little tipsy on Tunneling Nidwyrm bloodbrew (“low kohlic content”), blurts out: “Chen has the power to make people feel safe.” Chen, over the noise: “What? It’s so loud in here… Feel safe? I never heard these words from you before, Supervisor.”

Later, when someone asks how Chen keeps going on three hours of sleep, Perlica answers seriously: “Chen is … determined to shoulder the brunt for everyone. Once she has set her mind onto something, persuading her to give up is extremely difficult.” Someone replies that they thought Chen was easy-going. Perlica: “Maybe she’s just a little slow.” The file ends on the obvious reaction: “Supervisor Perlica, did you just say something bad about Chen?!”

## The Mother With the Hidden Sword

File 3 is where the jokes stop. Her birth certificate, which she found “after an extended search through her personal belongings,” says she was born far outside the Civilization Band in the Year 132, at a place she doesn’t recognize. What she remembers is Hongshan: lying in her mother’s arms under the crater ridges, a sanded stick as her first sword, and a kiss on the head as her first reward for disarming another kid.

Then the Aggeloi came. Her mother “suddenly opened a door hidden within the wardrobe and took out a blade she never seen before, and rushed out of their home.” After Chen’s tenth birthday party, her father wiped the cream off her cheeks and told her the news. She has not seen her mother since.

Chen does not call it a disappearance. “She didn’t disappear. I know she’s still alive. We just don’t know where she went and when she’d be back. She also made a very important promise with me!”

## The Bun, and Why “Fate”

![A bun split badly, a small piece labelled Chen and a large piece labelled Perlica, with "Year 11 of 20" of Chen's life story counting up](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/chen-qianyu-lore/chen-bun-split.webp)

She told that story to Perlica on the afternoon they met. Perlica “resembled a TGCC heiress” but said she came from a place called Endfield. They shared a Mo bun beside a mud trail. Chen did most of the work pushing the burdenbeast cart, and “the quiet and well-behaved Perlica ate way more than she did.” Chen got the smaller share because she spent the afternoon telling Perlica the first twenty years of her life.

When Chen asks about Perlica’s family, Perlica answers quietly: “Just like yours, I don’t know … when my family would return. And we also made an important promise…” Chen’s reply: “Oh, I guess we’re really fated to meet each other!” She grabs Perlica’s shoulder, and feels her stiffen, then relax.

That is our reading of the six words. The files never spell it out, but “It’s fate” is the same thing she said to Perlica beside the mud trail: two people waiting on a family that made them a promise. The HR assistant got there too, calling the line the result of “an extended period of self-contemplation.”

## The Father Who Doesn’t Ask

File 4 is told from her father’s side. Guang Jianshan, whose name means “builder of Hongshan,” knew the courtyard gate by its groans: five in the morning for sword practice, eight for grabbing food off his plate on the way to Tanjian Hall, midnight for sneaking out of her second-floor window. He knew about the sneaking. He quietly paved a flat path to the gate so she would not trip in the dark.

One Monday she comes home after six months away, exhausted, with no card spending for nearly four days. He asks one question: “Hungry?” He makes noodles with two extra pieces of meat. She tells him they are “really salty,” then admits, “Dad, I think I have trouble staying at a single place for long.”

His answer is something he has kept from her: “your ma… She actually left Hongshan three times.” He won’t say more, because her mother told him not to. Chen perks up immediately and starts eating again. He watches her, and asks: “So when are you moving out again?”

## Chen in Other Operators’ Files

She turns up in a few other stories on this site:

* **Da Pan:** he joined Endfield with a recommendation from Chen Qianyu, and his first profile file is an essay she wrote as a kid, spelling mistakes included (“Uncle Pan the Everchenjing”). See [Da Pan’s lore](https://endfieldhub.org/blog/da-pan-lore-sad-backstory-hongshan-endfield).
* **Tangtang:** Tangtang caught her crying on camera and ran around the Dijiang calling her “Green Scales,” until Mi Fu lifted both of them off the floor by the collar. That story is in [why Tangtang is called Soup Soup](https://endfieldhub.org/blog/why-tangtang-is-called-soup-soup-funny-moments-endfield).

## Why Her Story Works

![The HR form again, with "I just wanna join. It's fate." now stamped APPROVED](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/chen-qianyu-lore/chen-approved.webp)

Every file has the same shape. Someone tries to pin Chen down: HR with a revision deadline, colleagues with a sleep schedule, her father with a question he never asks. She doesn’t explain herself, and they end up adjusting instead. The HR summary says it outright: her “inner thoughts and feelings are not as casual as she makes them out to be.” Six words were enough because the reason behind them is a promise she has been waiting on since she was ten.
