**Ember turns every recruit away because the best of them would do exactly what her squad did: give their lives to finish a mission she survived.** She is the only survivor of the 28-strong assault banner Gray Wedge, and the job her order gave her is to replace them.

Her official operator files tell it in pieces: a battle report, a farewell at a rainy fortress gate, an interview with a challenger she put in a cast, and a photo of five soldiers pretending to drink. Put together, they explain why the knight whose whole job is recruiting has never passed anyone.

**How we checked this.** Everything below comes from Ember’s profile records, voice lines and message threads in the official English localization, checked against the current game data on 11 October 2026\. Where we read between the lines, we say so.

## TL;DR - Key Points

* **She came home with twenty-eight dog tags.** The urns would not fit in her baggage, so she carries her fallen comrades’ service tags, and they rattle with every step.
* **Her squad met something new.** In a seven-day battle, Gray Wedge engaged an unknown Aggelos codenamed High Tower ahead of schedule. The report lists one Oathkeeper left, “no longer combat-capable.”
* **People whispered.** Almost no one saw her off. Her commander, Castellan Zasso, spared her.
* **Her order sent her home to recruit.** Anyone who wants to join has to fight her. She has not passed a single challenger.
* **Her question to one of them:** what would you let your friends do if you were the dead weight? “Nilla and Claire did exactly that… They all did… And this is why I cannot approve you.”
* **She is still hunting High Tower.** And her real name is Azrila. Ember is the codename she picked: “as long as there’s a chance to burn, Ember will reignite the flames.”

## Who Is Ember?

![Ember's hook frame: "28 dog tags. One survivor." over her art and a curtain of numbered service tags](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/ember-lore/ember-28-dog-tags.webp)

Ember is a Sankta born on April 10, a knight of the **Order of Steel Oath**, the coalition whose soldiers, the **Oathkeepers**, hold the northern front against the **Aggeloi**. Her name is **Azrila**. In battle she is a 6-star Heat Defender who fights with a greatsword. Her kit, builds and team comps are on [her operator page](https://endfieldhub.org/characters/ember) and in the [Ember build guide](https://endfieldhub.org/blog/ember-build-guide-dps-support-weapons-teams-endfield).

Her HR summary is short: she “saw active service on the northern front against the Aggeloi before returning to the Civilization Band to manage the posthumous affairs of her late comrades and recruit new soldiers.” On the recommendation of Order Castellan Gerald “The Sanctified” Zasso, she now works with Endfield Industries. The file closes with an unusual note, added at Supervisor Perlica’s request: “unnecessary questioning of her past remains an offense to her personal dignity.”

Her medical report lists her as Oripathy positive, with combat trauma “throughout her body that have yet to fully heal.” She still scores Excellent in physical strength, combat skill and tactical acumen.

## The Nails: What Her Squad Was Built For

![Ember's "The Nails" frame: a steel nail punching through a wall of dark shards](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/ember-lore/ember-the-nails.webp)

Ember served in an **assault banner**, the squads that carry out “Ankhor-busting missions.” Other Oathkeepers call them the **Nail**: “They would pierce through the defenses, hit the mark, survive the encirclement, and wait for the main hammering strike to silence the Ankhor permanently.”

Her file calls her “a dream soldier for any commander: skilled, professional, steadfast, experienced,” and quotes the Order’s view of the job:

“The war in the north is an arithmetic problem… It is not uncommon to fight 200-point Aggeloi forces with a 100-point company. Every score we miss must be avenged with interest.”

She describes it the same way herself: tactical squads like hers are “tasked with swiftly disrupting enemy formations, neutralizing Ankhors, and preventing the emergence of more dangerous Aggeloi clusters. These missions are highly risky, but we take pride in carrying them out.” In training, she could take on a whole Homoiossaron cluster alone, so her commander “would send full squads of new recruits to fight me.”

## The Battle That Left Her Alone

![Ember's "High Tower" frame: a black spire rising over her battle art](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/ember-lore/ember-high-tower.webp)

One of her profile records is an after-action report by Intel Officer Roland Arlos, written for Castellan Zasso and annotated by the Commandery. It covers a **seven-day engagement** from February 10 to 18, Year 152:

* **The interception failed.** Ankhors fell “ahead of schedule” and entered a mobile orbit. The interception fleet missed. The Commandery calls this “the biggest and most severe failure of this entire battle.”
* **Four assault banners went in.** When a second Ankhorfall hit, Gray Wedge, Flood Peak, Blazing Fire and Black Wings were sent to assault the sites.
* **Something new appeared.** On February 12, an “unregistered Aggeloid pattern (temporarily codenamed ‘High Tower’ by our frontline elements)” was sighted. “The assault banner Gray Wedge engaged the High Tower ahead of schedule, causing our frontal attack formations to disintegrate one after another.”
* **The banners went silent.** Contact with Flood Peak and Blazing Fire was lost that night, Black Wings on the 13th, and Gray Wedge on the 15th.
* **Reinforcements ended it.** A mothership arrived on the 16th, and the remaining Aggeloi withdrew on the 18th.

The toll was 623 killed and 854 severely wounded. Flood Peak, Blazing Fire and Black Wings “have been removed from our roster.” The last line about Gray Wedge is this: “One Oathkeeper, though no longer combat-capable, remains in the assault banner Gray Wedge.”

![Ember's "1 soldier left" frame: twenty-seven tags fall and one glows orange](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/ember-lore/ember-one-soldier-left.webp)

High Tower got an official codename afterwards, **Psithyrosson**. The officer annotating the report is not sure it belongs on the list at all: “I have my doubts and suspicions about whether that entity can be classified as an Aggelos, if at all.”

## The Whispers and the Verdict

![Ember's "One walked out. 28 didn't." frame over her art in the snow](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/ember-lore/ember-one-walked-out.webp)

The report’s wording hides a fight. The Commandery’s comment pushes back on the final section: “If you insist on defending that Oathkeeper of that assault banner, then I shall provide a more detailed analysis report regarding the Psithyrosson. Truth be told, I am not inclined to believe our best elites would commit an error as severe and inane as in this particular case.”

Another file is the farewell, told by the Order’s **Grand Treasurer**. He mentions “festering rumors” and says he will not listen to them, because “doubting your fellow Oathkeeper was a path to calamity.” Nobody knows how she survived. “No one else came to see her off.”

“The Castellan has given his verdict,” he tells her. She could not fit the cremation urns of twenty-eight Oathkeepers into her baggage, so she took their service tags instead, and “they clattered and rang with every movement, but no one laughed.” He offers to let her see Nilla’s weapon in the Vault of Relics one last time. She says no, she will leave at once. He swears to look after her patron firearm. Her last words at the gate: “The Crusade will eventually end.”

Later she tells the Endmin what the verdict meant to her: “That was when I realized why the Castellan spared me: I could understand the sacrifices they made for victory.”

## The Crusade: Why She Has to Recruit

The Oathkeepers have a tradition for squads like hers. “When a squad is too depleted to continue, an Oathkeeper must retreat to recruit new allies. You could consider this a form of Crusade.” Those who want to join have to fight her: “Strength and skill are essential, but what truly matters is what the fight reveals about a challenger’s character.”

![Ember's tradition frame: "Squad wiped out, survivor recruits. Want in? Beat her first. Passed: 0"](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/ember-lore/ember-passed-zero.webp)

She knows how it can end. Other veterans got the same order, “sent to the rear to recruit, but never returned to the fortress. Perhaps that’s a respectful way of saying they were quietly retired. But I don’t intend to follow that path, which is why the commander referred me to you.” She adds, quietly: “it seems my Crusade has gone on for far too long.”

There is another reason she was sent away early. Delivering keepsakes and ashes to the families, she ended up consoling everyone, and even “stopped a soldier’s best friend from heading north for revenge… Perhaps that’s why the commander insisted I begin the Crusade without delay.”

## The Challenger With the Broken Leg

![Ember's question in serif italics: "If you were too hurt to swing your sword, and your friends were losing just to keep you alive, what would you let them do?"](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/ember-lore/ember-her-question.webp)

Her last profile file is an interview with one challenger, recorded by someone investigating the trials. He lost, with “a fracture of the calf bones,” and holds no grudge: “People can indeed communicate with each other by crossing their blades.” Told that she passed nobody, not even “that champion knight from the majors,” he is surprised.

After the trial she visited him, and asked:

“The powerful enemy is before you, but you no longer had the strength to even swing your blade. Your comrades are slowly losing every hope of victory just to keep you alive… What would you do in this situation? Or rather, what would you let them do?”

He gave the answer any recruit raised on frontline stories would give: “if I’m already a piece of dead weight, I might as well give my comrades another chance.”

She looked conflicted. “Nilla and Claire did exactly that,” she said. “They all did… And this is why I cannot approve you.”

![Ember's "They all did." frame: all twenty-eight tags burning orange](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/ember-lore/ember-they-all-did.webp)

He felt she did not disagree with him so much as hesitate over something else, and that she was “in need of serious help.” She forced a smile, praised his combat skills and told him to try again once he healed. She also asked him plenty of questions about the person now interviewing him, who is from Endfield, and he wonders aloud whether that means she is staying there a while. The file ends with a note to logistics: “Operator Ember may need to receive an ordinary visitor next month.”

## The Photo

![The toast nobody drank: five silhouettes raising cups, with the names Claire, Zhao, Nilla, Lucion and Fiyanggu](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/ember-lore/ember-the-toast.webp)

In one trust dialog she shows the Endmin her squad: “This is Claire, these are Zhao, Nilla, and Lucion. That sharp-eyed one is Fiyanggu, a rookie. None of them actually drank. We only pretended to toast because a journalist was visiting.”

“They were all remarkable soldiers, and that’s why they chose that day to complete the mission. If their successors are just as exceptional … I don’t think I can bring myself to send them to the north. Why am I thinking this way, Endmin? What am I lacking?”

## Zhao’s Weapon: Why She Stopped Wanting Revenge

In a message thread, Endfield receives a package from the Order: samples of unknown Aggeloi, sent so Ember can identify High Tower among them. She did not find it, and she is relieved: “If High Tower returns to the north before my mission is complete, I risk missing a crucial opportunity.” When it does, she wants to go back to the front. “This is far beyond a personal vendetta.”

She admits she started her Crusade “driven by anger,” ready to take High Tower down “even if it cost me my life.” Then she met the families. “When Zhao perished, his father only accepted the urn and gave his weapon back to me.” His family believed Zhao’s weapon “should be wielded only by someone who understands its purpose.”

Dying for revenge would also have proved the rumors right: “many would think that the only survivor of assault banner Gray Wedge escaped through the machination of luck. But that was not the case.” So: “I will value the life I have now, rather than end up like those meaningless war machines. Though I have yet to overcome the mental barrier and cannot enlist new recruits, I believe what has occurred must be properly resolved.”

## Why She Calls Herself Ember

![Ember's name lit like a fire over her art among the planted swords](https://endfieldhub.org/images/blog/ember-lore/ember-reignite.webp)

“Ember, the codename is my own choice. I don’t intend to run from the truth: I’m still not ready to return to the northern front. But as long as there’s a chance to burn, Ember will reignite the flames.”

Her fire is literal, too. Her Originium Arts “can ignite materials and burn enemies,” and with precise control she uses them to disinfect wounds, though she insists “they are no substitute for real medical arts.”

The gun is the other promise. Most Sankta prefer guns, and she owns one, a Guardian Gun, but she left it at the fortress: “My gun is more like a part of who I am. Leaving it there serves as a reminder that one day I will return.”

## Off Duty, She Is Still a Knight

Her lighter moments are still about the war:

* **Training.** Her daily regimen is “eighty kilometers of endurance running. Forty sets of heavy bench press. Two to four hours of sparring.” Every visit to the Training Cabin needs a special request form “and the inevitable damage report form.” A crowd of operators now trains with her, shouting “We must do this for Endfield.” The Endmin’s advice: encourage them “through eye contact.”
* **A wedding gift.** Two strangers she rescued from a cavern, who had cared for each other for days while hiding from the Aggeloi, invite her to their wedding. Her gift idea, since “the most memorable moment is surely when they vowed to share their fates”: a remnant of the kind of Aggelos that nearly broke through during the rescue.
* **The ship.** She is still adjusting to a vessel that is “not built for war,” and once points out the Oathkeepers’ defense lines below the aurora before realizing she has “misidentified the location.”

## So Why Does Ember Turn Every Recruit Away?

Because passing the trial proves the wrong thing. The trial looks for strength, skill and character, and the best answer to her question, “I would give my comrades another chance,” is exactly what Nilla, Claire and the rest of Gray Wedge did on the day they “chose to complete the mission.” She survived it. A recruit as good as them would be one more name on a tag she carries.

The files never say outright that her squad died to keep her alive. They put her question about being the dead weight next to “They all did,” and leave it there. What they do say is that she knows the problem is in her, not the recruits: “What am I lacking?” Her commander sent her to Endfield to find out. Until then, the tags stay on her armor, and the gun stays at the fortress.
