I'm playing through the story and... what exactly is an Ankhor?

I'm reading all of the fluff pieces you get in the Intel archive to help get my bearings and figure out what this game is even about, but while there is an entry for the Aggeloi, there's not really any information of the Ankhors that create them. So, what exactly is going on here? Why are there magic rock towers and why exactly are they spewing rock monsters everywhere? Is that mystery just the central plot or am I missing something?

Isnt that the huge spear needle that fked up endfield bases at the start of the game
