Any good tips for combat?

AE F2P Player here.
I started playing for the factories, which is something I love, but I think I suck at combat. I would love some advice.

So far I beat the marblestone lady boss, first try, but not sure I am doing things right.

My F2P Team: Endmin, Perlica, Chen, Pogra... All maxed to lvl 50, with recommended weapons at lvl 60.

Gear... I cannot figure this out, really. I am not sure which one is best for each character.

In combat:

I try to finish the combo so I can trigger the combo assists (RB).
If I understand correctly I have 3 yellow energy bars, shared among all team members. I launch their skills randomly,as I'm never sure what they exactly do. I do not know if the energy bars fill just over time or with specific actions.
The ultimates... well, also randomly when I realize they are available. I find it very difficult to know when a ultimate has been fully charged. And again, no idea how they charge.

When battling the general map goons, like at lvl 30, I think I should be fulminating them, with 20lvls difference, but that is not my impression. Maybe I'm missing something else.

Well then there's the issue, you don't know what your units are doing. If you're not good with figuring out the strategies from descriptions I'd recommend opening the in-game training tool and playing through the tutorials for the characters you are currently using. They go through all the basics in a fairly concise way.
