Tangtang found an old treasure map with her own name on it, then remembered she drew it herself as a kid. Her chat logs with Darkmask lead from talking machines and failed reading lessons to the crate she buried, and what was inside.

It starts with one text to the boss. By the third chat, Tangtang has learned to read just well enough to sound out the word on a map from the Qingbo Stockade storeroom, shoved a fish into a machine that is not a fish scaler, and dug up the crate she buried as a child. Every line below is from the game.

How we checked this. Every quote comes from the official English text of Arknights Endfield: Tangtang’s three SNS chats, her ambient reading-lesson chats with Yunzhu in Wuling, and one line of Mi Fu’s, checked against the current game data on 25 October 2026. Where a chat lets you pick between two replies, we quote one and say so. Where we read between the lines, we say that too. Images are frames from our YouTube Short and use Hypergryph / Gryphline art.

Short version first: the whole story in under three minutes, drawn as a kid’s crayon treasure map, from our YouTube channel. Every message, word for word, follows below. More backstories are on the Endfield lore hub.

TL;DR - Key Points

  • Darkmask is what Tangtang calls the player. Her first chat asks why nobody told her about “all these badasses on the Dijiang”. The badasses are machines.
  • She orders talking machines for the stockade, because the crew back home “just don’t get it. Dumb.” Darkmask has already sent voice modules.
  • The reading lessons go badly. Fangxing Avenue becomes “FANCY AVENUE”, five fruits a month become two because she ate the rest, and her tutor says Captain Mi Fu was a far better student.
  • The treasure map is hers. She sounds out one word, “Tang”, and remembers she drew it herself, the day attackers broke into the stockade.
  • The fish scaler is not a fish scaler. It launches the fish, she chases it, and digs up the crate.
  • Inside: toys, a drawing of her family, and her dad’s flowers. Darkmask’s answer to “how did it end up being such a crazy coincidence?” is that the stockade is finally safe.

Who Does Tangtang Call Darkmask?

You. Darkmask is Tangtang’s name for the Endministrator, the boss of Endfield Industries, and she uses it like a title. In one story mission the player’s own message reads “Darkmask seeks your audience.”

Tangtang's first message to Darkmask asking why nobody told her about the badasses on the big ship

Her first chat opens with a complaint: “Darkmask, how come you never told me about all these badasses on the Dijiang?” The badasses turn out to be the ship’s machines. “Oh you have no idea, those tin-can badasses are something else! They actually move according to what I say!”

A crayon vending robot and a thermostat, with WHOOSH and BEEP BEEP written under them

She gives two examples. “I said I wanted a drink, and WHOOSH! It spat one right out!” And: “And that thing that adjusts the temperature! I said it was too hot, it went BEEP BEEP and instantly cooled everything down!” When Darkmask asks about all the sound effects, she explains that Mad Woman taught her voice input: “Just hold this little button and talk, and words pop right out! Super handy.”

What Did Tangtang Order for Qingbo Stockade?

More machines. “I just wanna ask you, can we get a few of these talk-listening machines for the stockade?” The ones Endfield already sent were fine, she says, “but the guys back home … ugh, their brains just don’t get it. Can’t figure ‘em out at all. Dumb.”

An order slip for more talking machines, stamped DUMB in red

Darkmask is a step ahead. In one of the two replies the game lets you pick: “I noticed earlier that the machine was too complex for you, so I added voice modules. Let’s run a few more tests, then we’ll install them all over Qingbo Stockade.” The other reply says the same thing more kindly: some stockade residents couldn’t really read.

Darkmask's typed reply, voice modules on the way, over a parcel marked VOICE

Tangtang’s verdict: “Darkmask, not gonna lie, you’re seriously the most solid person ever.” She promises a feast next time Darkmask visits: “Gonna catch a big fin and have He Lao stew it up proper.” Hold on to that fin.

Can Tangtang Read?

Not yet. Darkmask suggests she learn (“You’ll run into more stuff like this later, after all.”), and she is not worried: “Piece of cake! Someone as awesome as me? Learning this stuff is a total cinch.”

The lessons themselves play out as ambient chats in Wuling with her tutor, Yunzhu. One of them stops at a street sign:

Tangtang: It’s FANCY! FANCY AVENUE! I’ll only read it this way! Tangtang: I’m gonna change the signs of Wuling to FANCY!

The Fangxing Avenue sign scribbled out in red, with FANCY AVE and four more FANCY street signs

She already uses it. A message from one of her story missions ends: “Meet me at Fancy Arvaynew. B there!” The player’s reaction: “I guess she’s trying to type Fangxing Avenue.”

The maths lesson goes worse:

Yunzhu: You get five fruits in a month. What do you get after four? Yunzhu: How did you end up with just two fruits? Tangtang: I ate the rest, duh. Nobody keeps fruits around for months.

A chalkboard with five fruits a month, after 4 months, a big red 2 and three fruit cores, stamped I ate the rest

And then the tutor quits, with the one comparison guaranteed to land:

Yunzhu: I give up. Captain Mi was a far better student. Tangtang: Better?! THAT MAD WOMAN?! Get back here and teach me again!

BETTER in shaking red letters over Mi Fu's art, with TEACH ME AGAIN underneath

Captain Mi is Mi Fu, the captain of Wuling’s watch, and Mad Woman is Tangtang’s name for her. Mi Fu confirms it in her own lines: “that little kitty … she just keeps yapping ‘Mad Woman’ at me. Tsk, like I really care.” Remember the name; she comes back.

What Was on Tangtang’s Treasure Map?

Her second chat opens in a rush: “Darkmask! Darkmask!! You there? I found a treasure map in the village storeroom. It looks like some kinda treasure our ancestors left behind.” She offers to split it fifty-fifty.

“This map’s all tattered and ancient. Got a huge X marked near the ancestral spring. If it’s not a treasure map, what else could it be?” Asked about other marks, she critiques the art first: “Got two little figures drawn on here. These ears … is this a Feline? Why are our ancestors so bad at drawing?”

Then the writing, and the lessons pay off: “Whoa, there really is writing here. Good thing I listened to you and learned a little. Wait, what’s this character? Don’t know it. ‘Tang’ … that’s my name!”

The word TANG circled in red on the map, with that's my name underneath

Darkmask asks the obvious question (“Sounds like you made this treasure map yourself.”), and she folds: “Yikes … uh … I remember now. I drew this map myself.”

Why Did Tangtang Bury the Crate?

Because she was scared. “One day those splatters broke into the stockade. The grown ups chased them off, but I was scared they’d come back and steal my treasure. So I grabbed a crate and got mad woman to help me hide all our treasure inside. Said we’d dig it all up when Qingbo Stockade was safe again.”

A night crayon village with a crate and Mi Fu's art labelled yes, that one, MAD WOMAN

Yes, the same Mad Woman. The chat never gives Tangtang’s age; she only says the grown-ups chased the attackers off, so “as a kid” is our reading.

What did she bury? “It’s been so many years, I don’t even remember what’s in there anymore. Besides, I can’t be bothered to dig up mad woman’s stuff. Let it rot in the ground for all I care.”

What's inside, three question marks and a LET IT ROT stamp

Then she asks for a paper shredder (“one of those metal boxes that shreds paper into pieces with a ding”), decides she probably can’t work it, and says she’ll just tear the map up herself.

What Happened With the Fish Scaler?

The third chat shows the lessons working. “Darkmark, those voice modules are installed now,” she writes, and the crew “asked me to thank you”. The punctuation is everywhere because, as she puts it, “I actually learned how to type with my hands> Pretty impressive huh”.

Tangtang's hand-typed message with Darkmark and fluid plump underlined, above a crayon machine going CHUGGA CHUGGA

She is also identifying the new equipment. “That new thing you sent over is a fluid plump, right, the one for plumping water.” And: “that thing that goes chugga chugga, I know that one too, it’s for feen-skaling! There’s a slot to stuff things in, let me try now!” Darkmask: “Chief, we didn’t send over any kitchen appliances!”

The machine with IT IS NOT. written above it

She goes offline. When she comes back: “Splattered all over my face! I tossed the feen in, and that metal block just jammed up, so I smacked it. Next thing I knew, it spit the feen out and launched it ten miles away! Gotta go, I need to get that feen back.”

Next message: “Guess what, Darkmark. That grovebeast was stuck in the ground, and when I dug under it, turns out it was the exact crate I buried with mab woman.”

The chat doesn’t say the fish landed by the grovebeast; that link comes from the order of her messages.

What Was Inside Tangtang’s Crate?

She almost didn’t look. “I was gonna kick it into the water and let the ancestral spring take it. But I couldn’t help it, so I opened it up and had a look.”

“It’s full of little toys … bamboo bugs, sandbags, whistles, marbles… There’s also a drawing. It’s of her, my dad, me, my brother, uncle Shang… I remember we drew it together. There was a bundle of flowers too, picked by my dad. I put them in there, but they’ve all rotted from the soil.”

“Honestly, I’d forgotten all about them, but seeing it now, everything came rushing back. How did it end up being such a crazy coincidence?”

Darkmask’s answer: “Maybe it’s because… Qingbo Stockade is finally safe now.” She takes it her own way: “Makes sense, your brain’s always quicker than mine! So it was the ancestral spring showing its power after all!” She offers to share the treasure, including “mad woman’s share too, not leaving a single thing for her”.

Darkmask turns it down and asks for the big fin from the first chat instead: “Just treat me to bamboo fin stew.” Her last messages: “Deal, today’s a good day too, so come over now, let’s celebrate. I’m gonna catch it for you with my own hands!”

Where Do These Chats Come From?

  • The three SNS chats are Tangtang’s topic chats on the handyterm: the talking machines, the treasure map, and the voice modules and crate.
  • The reading lessons are ambient chats between Tangtang and Yunzhu in Wuling City, not part of the SNS chats, so the order we tell them in is ours.
  • “Darkmask seeks your audience” and “Fancy Arvaynew” are messages from her story missions.
  • Mad Woman is Mi Fu on Mi Fu’s own word, quoted above.
