WHY TANGTANG IS CALLED SOUP SOUP IN ENDFIELD

Table of Contents
Tangtang is called Soup Soup because of how her name is written. In Chinese she is 汤汤, and 汤 (tāng) means soup. Say the name twice in English and you get Soup Soup, and the Endfield community adopted it as her nickname. The self-styled “Supreme Chief” of Qingbo Stockade has also been called the Soupreme Chief ever since.
How we checked this. Everything below comes from Tangtang’s own in-game files: her operator profile, her Operator Records and her Dijiang voice lines in the official English text. The nickname table also gives the original Chinese line each English nickname was translated from. We checked the current Version 1.x text on 3 October 2026. If you want her serious side, the river, the eye and the decade-old raid, that lives in our full Tangtang lore deep dive.

Soup, not sugar
One thing gets mixed up a lot. Tangtang’s name is not 糖 (táng), which means sugar. It is 汤, soup, written with the water radical on the left.
That radical is a nice coincidence for a girl the Stockade calls the River’s Daughter. In older literary Chinese the doubled 汤汤 can also be read shāngshāng, a word for rushing, surging water. It is the same pair of characters you find in the classical phrase 浩浩汤汤, “vast and surging.” The game never says the name was chosen for that, so treat it as a fun reading rather than lore. Still, a foundling pulled out of a river, named with two water characters, is hard to ignore.
Every nickname Tangtang gives the crew
Tangtang renames almost everyone she meets in the style of Qingbo Stockade, and her Operator Records note she gives her new Dijiang friends “affectionate nicknames.” The English localization smooths a few of them out. Here is each one with the Chinese it comes from.
| English nickname | Original Chinese | Literal meaning | Who it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darkmask | 黑面煞 | Black-faced fiend | The Endministrator |
| Green Scales | 小青龙 | Little green dragon | Chen Qianyu |
| Old Iron-face | 三头铁面公 | Three-headed iron-faced sir | Endfield’s HR personnel assistant |
| Mad woman | 红脸婆 | Red-faced woman | Mi Fu |
| Pale Scribe | 白面书生 | Pale-faced scholar | A Dijiang crew member her lines never name |
A few notes on the table:
- Darkmask is the one you will hear most. 煞 is closer to “fiend” or “menace” than “mask,” so the Chinese is a touch more cheeky than the English.
- Green Scales in Chinese is little green dragon, a nod to Chen being Lung. It sounds a lot more affectionate in the original.
- Pale Scribe (白面书生) is a stock phrase for a delicate, bookish young man. Her lines ask the Endministrator to “give me Pale Scribe and Green Scales” but never say who Pale Scribe is, so we will not guess.
- Mad woman is how the English renders 红脸婆. Mi Fu is the Wuling officer who has chased her down more times than either of them can count, and the pair have a running feud covered in our Mi Fu lore deep dive.
She also calls people she likes Fam, and her own promotion line sums up her idea of loyalty: “If I get a sip of soup, you get a bite of meat. What, it should be the other way around? Nah, that’s just how it goes.”
Her funniest moments, from her own files
These all come straight from her files and voice lines, in roughly the order a new player meets them.
1. She slapped the HR robot on day one
Endfield sent a three-panel personnel assistant to run her onboarding interview. Its own record of the meeting opens with “Thwack! Thwack!” She decided it looked like “a three-headed iron tuskbeast,” slapped it, named it Old Iron-face, hung a woven bamboo wreath over one of its panels and told it to “come join me in Qingbo Stockade. Come on, call me Chief!” The assistant notes, a little wearily, that it cannot join her and conquer Talos-II, and that “she always manages to find me.”
2. She paid the vending machine in her own money
On her first day aboard the Dijiang she circled the canteen vending machine several times. An operator showed her how coins and buttons work, and she listened quietly. That evening the machine set off an alarm, and Xaihi had to fish a Tangtang Cert out of the coin slot. A later voice line insists the machine “that spits out little bottles when you kick it” was “definitely” not broken by her.
3. She inflated her own currency
Tangtang Certs are her reward system. Once the Endministrator collects too many, she changes the rules on the spot: “From now on, you, Darkmask, need five hundred to redeem just once… Heh, my certs, my rules!”
4. The only thing she fears is the medics
She claims she has never lost a real spar. The one opponent she cannot handle is the Dijiang medical team, who “keep saying they’ll treat my Oripathy and try to jab my butt with needles.” The line ends with her asking Darkmask to hide her.
5. One eye, too many reports
Promote her enough times and the paperwork arrives. Her answer: “I’ve only got one eye, I can’t read that many reports! You handle the construction plans for now… I’m not slacking off! This is a strategic delay.”
6. The Endmin bet she lost in one breath
She bet Green Scales a ton of snacks that she could call the Endministrator “Endmin” for a whole day. The line opens “Endmin Endmin Endmin,” gloats that she is “so winning this time,” then slips: “Just wait until she coughs up the cash, Darkm… Ack! I didn’t say it! You misheard! That one doesn’t count!”
7. The damage bill
A green-haired patrol rookie tried to return her wallet and chased her halfway across the base to do it. She assumed he was arresting her, bolted, and “might’ve bumped into a few crates.” Her defense: “Just old habits from dodging watchguards back in Wuling.”
8. The “buggly” video and the Defeated Chief
Her fourth Operator Record is the best of the lot. Tangtang got hold of a Wuling camera she nicknamed “lil’ Lupo” and caught Chen Qianyu crying on tape. She sprinted around the Dijiang yelling to Darkmask and Pale Scribe that she had “awesome vids of Green Scales’ crying face! AND THEY’RE BUGGLY!” Chen chased her around the Central Ring five or six times until Mi Fu, who could not watch any longer, lifted both of them off the floor by the collar. While the two of them argued, Chen slipped free, deleted the footage, and turned the camera on Tangtang instead. The record ends with a video of “Tangtang the Defeated Chief,” dangling by the scruff with drooping ears, “one that can be enjoyed over and over again.”
9. Her stress relief is yelling at water
Her advice to an overworked Endministrator: find a spot and shout. “How about that platform over there? Or that big window? Pfft, what do you mean this could cause problems? Holding it all in is the real problem!”
10. She offered the Endministrator a haircut
Everyone at the Stockade knows a bit of every trade, she explains, and she is “way better at cutting hair than my brother.” Then: “That hairstyle of yours? Two bullets oughta do it.”
Why the comedy lands
Endfield’s HR team expected a grieving, angry operator after what happened at Qingbo Stockade, and prepared psychological support. She arrived via tele-protocol “with a bright smile, not a shadow of distress in sight.” Months later their conclusion was that she did not need their help, and that her presence had “infused Dijiang with renewed vitality.”
That is the trick of the character. The same files that hold the vending machine and the buggly video also hold an infected eye, an Arts pattern nobody can explain and a childhood shaped by a raid on her home. Chen puts it best: “Though Tangtang grew up by the water, she’s more like an unquenchable flame.” Even the eyepatch has a reason under the joke. She wears it because the eye channels her Arts, and she once scarred Mi Fu by accident, “but hey, everyone says it gives me more Chief vibes.”
